Cruise Ships out of Norfolk Virginia

When you think about a city with a cool waterfront, you can’t help but think about Norfolk, Virginia. It’s got just about everything you need on the water and more. As Norfolk lends a helping hand to our neighbors in Baltimore, here’s a look at some specials offered by local hotels and shops for those who have seen their cruises diverted to the area in April 2024. CCL's voyages from Norfolk to the Caribbean include 4 sea days (2 southbound plus 2 northbound). The seaport has direct rail access to Heartland Corridor (railway serving freight trains) and is also connected to North Carolina Highway 42. The Port is adjacent to highways 64 and 564, and via Terminal Blvd to Hampton Blvd (Norfolk City), with additional access to roads 17 and 58.

The city is at less than 2 hours drive distance from Richmond, 3 hours from Northern Virginia and 3 hours from Raleigh. The cruise port benefits greatly from the Norfolk International Airport offering 200 flights daily. The airport is just min taxi drive from the cruise terminal. Norfolk, a city with a storied maritime history, is located at the junction of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean in southeastern Virginia.

Cruises from Norfolk VA

From the Cedar Grove parking lot, you will be taken by complimentary shuttle to the ship. We enjoyed drinks, musician and the narrative from the captain. The night was warm with a slight breeze and the sunset even cooperated. It includes all of the departures on Carnival Cruise Line. In February 2020, CCL-Carnival signed a 5-year agreement with Norfolk City for seasonal homeporting at Half Moone Cruise Center (2020 through 2025).

CRUISE PORTS BY REGION

The city works hard to make your cruise from Norfolk VA as easy and pleasant as possible. The Norfolk cruise terminal dock is next to a beautiful waterfront park and museum. This allows docking of large container ships/boxships with max capacity TEU-containers. Port's current annual capacity is around 1,43 million TEUs. It also offers 719 plugs for reefers (refrigerated containers).

Harbor Cruises

The port is used mainly by Carnival as a seasonal homeport for cruises to the Bahamas and Cuba cruises; a handful of other ships make one-off port stops here on repositioning cruises. Ships use Norfolk's Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, which is located walking distance from downtown. Parking for embarking passengers is available downtown via Cedar Grove Parking, located on Monticello Avenue between Virginia Beach Boulevard and Princess Anne Road. Complimentary shuttles provide transportation from the Cedar Grove facility to Half Moone. Everything the sunlight touches on Carnival Sunshine has been doused with an extra dose of fun.

Day 1: Norfolk

I imagine a lot depends on how the weather is, but we lucked out. It was calm (didn't help the sailing portion I suppose), and the skies were clear. We got to experience a perfect sunset, and even got a bonus moonrise out of the deal! The ship's Captain was great and explained everything as we were sailing. As it got to sunset time, a musician entertained the ship by walking around and taking requests. Set sail with the friendly and experienced crew of this 120-passenger sailing schooner.

The cruise ship terminal has its own parking area (day rates USD 15) and provides shuttle bus service to and from the terminal. The facility is sized 80,000 ft2 (7430 m2 / 1,8 acres). It is adjacent to the Nauticus (maritime-themed museum and science center) and the museum ship USS Wisconsin (Iowa-class battleship launched in 1943). Throughout the year, the waterfront's Town Point Park area hosts popular festivals and various public events. If you live in the Mid-Atlantic area, might we suggest one of our cruises from Norfolk? Set sail, as thousands of seafaring Americans have, when you book a Carnival cruise from the 400-year-old seaport of Norfolk. The city is today the proud home of a sparkling waterfront filled with green parks, lively shopping malls, delicious restaurants… and even fascinating maritime museums and monuments.

CCL starts its longest cruise season from Norfolk VA with Carnival Magic ship

Other cruise lines that have stopped in Norfolk include Crystal Cruises and Celebrity Cruises. The small ships of American Cruise Line stop in Norfolk on their way between Baltimore and Charleston. Norfolk cruises often range from 6-9 nights providing cruisers with a variety of different entertainment and dining options. Cruises depart from Nauticus in Downtown Norfolk, close to Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton and Williamsburg.

Such dredging works are conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers (federal agency) and in Norfolk Harbor Channel are required every months. In November 2016, Port Norfolk and Konecranes (Finnish crane manufacturer) signed a USD 217 million contract for building and delivering 86 rail-mounted gantry cranes. The US company TMEIC is the supplier of cranes' drive and control systems. As an exclusive CCL-Carnival homeport (since 2002), Norfolk's main competitors are the homeports Baltimore MD and Charleston SC (another CCL-exclusive departure port in the USA). Currently, Norfolk's cruise business generates ~USD 153 million annually (in direct spending by cruise companies and passengers/crew), ~USD 170 million in Virginia state wages, and supports ~2800 local jobs.

Traffic around the port can get hairy on cruise ship turnaround days, especially if there's a festival on at the adjacent Town Point Park. Plan accordingly, and consider getting dropped off or picked up a short walk from the terminal. Norfolk is an important naval town, and the Nauticus museum right at the cruise port will let you explore the past with a tour of the USS Wisconsin and the present with a visit to its science and technology center. General Douglas MacArthur is buried here, and visitors can pay homage at his memorial or get some retail therapy at the large shopping mall that bears his name.

In 2021 started the seasonal homeporting in Norfolk VA of the 4700-passenger liner Carnival Magic - the Port's ever-largest cruise vessel). Season 2021 included a series of 12 roundtrips and seasonal capacity ~50,000 tourists. Carnival Magic's 2023 ex-Norfolk season was CCL's ever-longest - 6 months (May 14th thru October 22nd).

An old Navy friend visited me and we decided to take this cruise.it was a great decision. The guide was unbelievably knowledgable, not only of the area but about all the ships we passed by as well. The surprising part for me was the fact that, even though I have lived here for many years, I was amazed by how much I learned about our area. I would recommend it to residents of this area and visitors alike.

When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. The tour was information and entertainment nonstop from boarding to disembarking. As we traveled through the harbor the captain told us about history, ship building, commerce, and more about the US Naval fleet than I can describe. Clearly, the captain has a deep and comprehensive knowledge and is not reading from a script.

The tour narrator (docent?), was extremely knowledgeable. The boat was set up and managed to keep passengers at social distance at all times. There are several hotels near the Norfolk Cruise Terminal. Some offer "park and cruise" package deals, and a few are within walking distance of the terminal. City and cruise line personnel are on hand at the cruise terminal to get you on and off the ship as quickly as possible. Join us aboard the Victory Rover for the Harborfest Parade of Sail!
